Having been relegated to a short section of the British Army's 'red book' War Office historical monograph 'Miscellaneous 'Q' Services', the Royal Army Veterinary Corps published an expanded account a few years later to ensure their exploits, achievements and experience was more thoroughly recorded.
Having waned before the war in the face of increasing mechanisation, the RAVC recovered some ground as the conflict moved into mountains and jungles in less-developed parts of the world - including pre-Dunkirk France in the case of the Indian Army's Animal Transport Companies of Force K6. Animal - mule - transport was a particularly important aspect of the Burma Campaign, so the book necessarily references the work of the Indian Army Veterinary Corps.
Of potential interest to Chindit enthusiasts, detailed reports by the Veterinary Officers of Special Force and 16 Brigade are included as appendices.
Originally published as a side-stapled paperback, this has been reprinted as a hardback in order to match the official series as closely as possible (including a reversed spine title).
