Andrew Bailard, son of Moritz & Theresa Boehlert, came to America from Baden in present-day Germany. Starting with nothing, Andrew headed west by wagon train from Missouri to California shortly after the gold rush, settled in Purissima near Half Moon Bay, converted rough land to successful farm twice, achieved financial success, and led a large and happy family to the Carpinteria Valley of California. After Andrew's early death, Martha Shoults Bailard raised their ten children--Mary, John, George, Theresa, Lawry, Joe, Ben, Kit, Ed and Myrt--who each made their mark in Carpinteria history.
