Working in Behavioral health is very challenging. You see some of the worst behaviors imaginable, which in many cases includes violence and physical restraints, and occasionally mechanical restraints being used to maintain the safety of staff and patients. These events are very traumatizing not just for the patient, but also for the staff. Having to defend yourself from violence, or having to place someone in restraints is something that will not soon be forgotten. After these events, you need a proper debriefing. Because of being short staffed and busy caring for other patients, this sometimes does not occur. That is where we come in. Our debrief journal will walk you through the debriefing steps on your own time. It will help you understand the situation, what you did, and how you feel to help process those feelings and minimize the negative impacts that they may have.
