From 1939 deep into the 1960s he was the classic private eye, the tough-fisted, hard-drinking, no-nonsense detective-for-hire who loved the ladies and loathed the criminals. His stories inspire movies even today, such as the 2006 Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (based on his novel Bodies Are Where You Find Them).
