The Death of the Forest retrieves three great figures
from the American past to tell about the bloodiest war
in American history, a war that made New England and
America what they are today. The main characters of
The Death of the Forest are: Metacomet, the Wampanoag
chief who almost defeated the English in King PhilipÕs
War of 1675-76; Mary Rowlandson, an English settler
who was taken hostage during the war and wrote the
first American best seller about her captivity; and
Charles Ives, AmericaÕs first great classical composer.
