The Holiday Garden is a tale of shrubs and flowers, trees and plants, who live in a garden belonging to wealthy and neglectful owners, and so it is that they have to fend for themselves.
It is the story of Big Dog, a handsome Cornus, who has escaped the incarceration of a nursery and has come to live in the Holiday Garden, and so found a small community of trees and plants who have become reliant upon each other for survival. It is an account of his love for the beautiful and elegant Pru, his tolerance of the annoying and nosy Mrs. Forsyth and his empathy for other smaller and more vulnerable plants and flowers.
With so little human care it is the very real and sad truth of what happens when gardens and their residents are abandoned to the mercy of Mother Nature, and their unfailing optimism.
Their little community suffers melancholy, unrequited love, happiness, and heartbreak. Their characters are dependent, simple, neighbourly, antisocial, generous and tender.
