As the title suggests, this exhibition is about art that has in some way been destroyed and has inspired responses by several contemporary artists. Artworks, such as the defaced, pillaged masterpieces of the Parthenon, stand as symbolic representations of a societyÕs existence and have paid the price over the eons. Defenseless in the face of conflict, they are silent victims. Just to give a few of countless recent examples: masterpieces in the Middle East and other areas where ISIS is in power are being taken or destroyed. Political upheaval in Egypt allowed, gangs of looters to steal a thousand ancient artifacts from the Malawi National Museum in Minya, Egypt in August 2013. And in February 2015, at an event titled ÒArt, Blasphemy and the Freedom of Expression,Ó in Copenhagen, Denmark, a gunman opened fire, killing one person and wounding three police officers.
