Even in a divisive world, we are all in the picture together.
The One Truthiness {Oakland:1} documents a participatory performance, where the audience reads aloud to each other from a book of first-person stories and original writing highlighting how the world looks and works differently for different people Ñ especially based on the perception of race.
While the audience reads, the artist & author, Charlie Levin, paints in translucent wax on glass. Our understanding of the story changes with each layer and each story. Layer by layer, we come to realize we never see the whole picture, few things are only what they first appear to be, and we can only move forward together by considering us all.
This edition includes the book text and photos of the painting from the original performance. The One Truthiness {Oakland:1} was originally performed in 2018 as the first in a series produced by Lower Bottom Playaz and poet and playwright Ayodele Nzinga in Oakland, California at The Flight Deck.
