The Prairie Waited, A Saga of the Sons of Salve by Anne Salverson Childers is about a Norwegian immigrant family who pioneered in Dakota Territory in the early 1880Õs. The story is based on the actual lives of Salve and Sissel Gurigard and their twelve children. It reconstructs their childhood days in Norway and recounts their pioneer lives in America. The story is grounded in history, reminiscence and on-site research conducted in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Canada and Norway. One by one the siblings separated themselves from the family and struck out to make their way alone. In their wake they left traces of tradition, seed for future generations, and various milestones for others. They were real people who helped to settle the northern prairies.
