This story is about a little known and unusual Cavalry Unit, the Ringgold Cavalry. This unit was formed in 1847 at the end of the Mexican War as an independent troop. It was the first cavalry unit to enter the Civil War in 1861 although it was not assigned to a regular Army regiment. The book covers this unique cavalry unit through four years of Civil War. This is a side of the Civil War that had never been properly documented. If the story of Civil War history is not kept alive by using the Ringgold and new state of West Virginia as a backdrop, then the story and the information that it holds could be lost forever.
