Zimbabwe is in the news today and we were there at the last gasp of colonial rule, before the war of liberation swept away the old order. We were a young couple, Nancy, the American and John, the South African, playing out our love story on a car trip through Rhodesia with two eccentric friends. Leigh Howard had a passion for all things Rhodesian and Yanni Christakos, as the older Greek student, styled himself as a world-weary sage who had seen it all.
Nancy decided after years of aversion to convention, that she wanted to be married to John. As a college student, the idea of marriage had not even entered JohnÕs consciousness. In this first person he-said/she-said memoir, we remember a journey through a country on the edge of change as we stumble through the first steps of a relationship that bridges two continents and two ways of life.
