Robert ClevelandÕs log home is an iconic part of the history of Wilkes County, North Carolina. It has long been recognized as the countyÕs oldest dwelling house, and it serves as a rare example of the type of architecture built by early settlers here in the late eighteenth century.
Robert Cleveland was a captain in the Wilkes County militia during the Revolutionary War, and he served in many civil offices in the decades that followed. One can imagine the planning sessions and high-level meetings that surely took place in the homeÕs parlor. He led a quiet life in comparison to his older and more boisterous brother Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, opting to raise his large family far outside of town on the waters of Lewis Fork. With sixteen children growing up in this house and many more grandchildren living nearby, it must have been a busy place during family gatherings.
Since 1987, this log cabin has been located in Wilkesboro behind the Wilkes Heritage Museum.
