She grew up on the Lemon Hill Farm of Daisy Bankes and Harold Smith.  In 1941, she graduated from Bliss College in Columbus and during the war worked for Firestone Tire, Ranco and Curtiss-Wright as well as the Foster Manufacturing Company in New Orleans, working as Mr. FosterÕs private secretary.  Upon her husbandÕs return to the states, she volunteered extensively in the community as a church secretary for more than two decades as well as serving as a docent for the Columbus Museum of Art.  In addition, she became interested in herb gardening, joining the Central Ohio Unit of the Herb Society of America.  Most notably, she wrote several articles about herbs including a weekly herbal column for a county newspaper for seventeen years.
