This book is designed to teach contract doctrine beginning with the most fundamental concepts and building on this until the structure of contract doctrine as a s coherent and cohesive regulation appears. The book begins with the most basic concept - exchange, and teaches it from the simple cases in which the consideration doctrine developed. Other key formation doctrines - defenses, assent, definiteness, capacity, and others - are ordered within the book to build on the fundamental concept. Along the way, the book gives ample opportunity for review so that students can understand how the doctrines cohere logically and functionally as regulation of promises. This book is intended for the first three-credit half of a six-credit course.
