[THE STRANDS] OCCUPYING THE PASSAGE

Malone_ARCH 7006 Integrative Design Studio|Professor Emery-McClure:The design investigation this semester will demand that one consider how to design for a grouping of dynamic systems that are in constant engagement. From the rapid fluctuations of the Rio Grande to the permeable/impermeable Mexico/US border to the drought in California and global climactic change, the La Linda Crossing will have to negotiate all. Similar to animals and plants that have attributes that allow them to survive the harshness and volatility of the desert landscape, so must your architectural response. Located in the isolation of the West Texas Chihuahuan desert but proximally to the largest source of water, the La Linda Crossing will employ ecological design practices in order to create a safe, adaptable, and harmonious construction. How does one build where there is either too much or not enough water? How does one create a gate that does not present itself as inside and outside but instead as through?
