When I reviewed my essays, on subjects ranging from cell mitosis to foxes, trees to geometry; Texas to the meaning of kindergarten; I found that a poem often lives at their heart, or that saves the day by Òbringing the runner home.Ó Here is a collection of examples. The commonality isnÕt the subject matter, itÕs the composition and thought process; itÕs the sense that finding the right word is always the crucial aspiration, and for me a poem usually does so. ItÕs welcoming the fox into the interior of the dialogue between the inner and outer world.
