American whaling voyages of the 19th century often lasted for years and wives would sometimes accompany their husbands to sea to ease their long absences. Elizabeth Willis was one such woman who braved the wilds of the open ocean, the cold of the Arctic and the alien environments of Oceania to accompany her whaler husband.
