Arnold Schlaich was a United States Army veteran of World War II. As a member of the 3rd Armored Division, he had seen the remains of uncounted thousands of human beings. He had participated in the killing of some of those. It was not something he thought he should talk about or be proud of.
"I have never had much to say, this you know, the war left a deep mark...but I would not have wished anything different. I wanted to get in but really I am no hero, just got noticed for some things, many others did so much more."
Official recognition came in the form of 2 battlefield commissions; a Belgian Fourrag�re for Bravery; Bronze Star for Valor; Distinguished Unit Citation Award; Purple Heart with 2 oak-leaf clusters; 5 campaign battle stars; and numerous letters of commendation. He took silent pride in his record especially the only accolade he ever sought, the respect and love of the men he fought with.
