This undergraduate essay was submitted for the capstone subject, HIST30060 Making History, for the University of Melbourne, in 2018. The primary objective of the project was to research and write a local history for a public audience. I selected Ballarat Gaol as the topic due to my interest in historical criminology and penology, and the significance of this Gaol for the establishment of VictoriaÕs prison system.
