TOP-NOTCH COMICS was first published by MLJ in December of 1939 and lasted twenty-seven
issues. Like so many of the great MLJ titles, TOP-NOTCH COMICS began as an action and adventure
anthology series, utilizing the talents of some of the Golden AgeÕs best artists. There are superhero
thrills with the Black Hood with art by Al Camy, the WIZARD- artwork by Edd Ashe; BOB PHANTOM
highlighted by the art of Bernard Klein and KARDAK the MAGICIAN with art by Carl Hubbell. WINGS
JOHNSON, an American transport pilot who enlists in the Royal Air Force when England declares
war on Germany, has stunning artwork by Ed Smalle. Plus intrigue in the adventures of Fran Frazer .
This is the final volume of TOP-NOTCH COMICS. After issue twenty-seven, the title was changed to
TOP-NOTCH LAUGH COMICS and other than the Black Hood focused primarily on humor stories.
This four hundred page collection contains the last six issues of the superhero-laden incarnation of
a truly TOP-NOTCH series.
