The war years of 1943 to 1945 took their toll on a small farming town in rural Wisconsin. ÒTorn PagesÓ is a story based on the real life experiences of the author Josephine Wolf Heyden, then 19, during her 2 years as the only teacher in a one-room schoolhouse. Though fictional, the characters are based on real people and the events that happened, both tragic and joyous during her life growing up on a farm with 7 siblings. The authenticity of the time flows through the words as colorful images of romance and tragedy. During the war years, a single girl was often left to date soldiers, never knowing whether or not they would come home. The story overflows with JosephineÕs passion for teaching, her family; life on a farm, and the many loves that came through her life.
