This book is intended for family history researchers, genealogists, and historians working with 18th-century Virginia records. Among the most valuable sources for this period are the tithable tax listsÑannual returns identifying individuals subject to personal taxation. While these records are well known to researchers, they can be difficult to use effectively. Many lists have incomplete coverage, inconsistent spellings, andÑmost criticallyÑoffer little clarity about where the listed individuals actually lived.
To address these challenges, this book presents newly reconstructed district boundary maps for Botetourt County, Virginia, covering the years 1770 through 1777. These maps are based on original research into court orders, geographic descriptions, and historical data, and are paired with full transcriptions of all surviving tithable lists for the county during that period. Together, the maps and transcriptions provide researchers with a more practical framework for connecting individuals and families to specific places on the landscape.
