Tricolored herons (egretta tricolor) are medium-sized wading birds with a distinctive white belly and stripe on the front of the neck. They are found primarily in coastal areas throughout the eastern United States to Central and South America. All of the photographs in this book were taken at nature preserves in the state of Florida. To capture these images, I enjoyably spent hundreds of hours observing and photographing these amazing birds. This book contains a wide variety of poses and behaviors including portraits, graceful flight, and hunting and catching small fish. Tricolored herons have multiple methods of hunting. Sometimes they stand in shallow water patiently waiting to see a fish, then stalk it through the water until, in split-second speed, they thrust their head and neck forward to get their prey. Other times, the hunting involves flying low over the water and lunging down in mid-air to grab the fish. I was fortunate to be able to document various hunting behaviors and capture the herons in a variety of positions, some graceful and some more like awkward contortions, but all fascinating. The images in this book represent a variety of processing methods. Some are presented in natural backgrounds and colors. For others, I converted them to monochrome -- black and white, sepia, or bluish cyanotype effect. In addition, some have been enhanced with textures as backgrounds to create more painterly images. As you browse this book, I hope you enjoy the beauty, grace and antics of these wonderful birds.
