This book traces the history of the University of California, Santa Cruz, from 1960 to 1991. It tells the story of how the campus came to be located in Santa Cruz and the challenges of designing and building the new campus. Emphasis is on the development of science facilities and programs, particularly the marine sciences. Meticulously researched, the book describes some of the key people and events that shaped campus development and includes over eighty photographs, primarily from University archives.
The author is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Biology and Director Emeritus of the Institute of Marine Studies. He joined the UC Santa Cruz faculty in 1965 and retired at the end of the 1990-91 academic year.
