Victorian architecture can be found all over the United States, but it is particularly common in California, where the Gold Rush and subsequent economic boom led to a rapid population increase and a demand for new housing. The name stems from the British and French custom of naming architectural styles for a reigning monarch. Queen Victoria reigned in Great Britain from 1837 to 1901 and although her rule did not extend to the United States, the term is often used for American buildings and styles, such as Stick, Eastlake, Italianate and Queen Anne, from that period.
