After studying at the Conservatory in Leipzig, composer, organist, and teacher Moritz Wilhelm Vogel remained in the city until his death. As founding director of the choir at St. Peter's Church, then choral director at the MatthŠikirche, with the Ossian Society for Sacred Music, and as music teacher at the Municipal College for Girls and the municipal high school for girls, where he was eventually appointed professor, he made an indelible impact on musical life in the city. His work as a teacher can be felt in his piano music, which is attractive and accessible without sacrificing either integrity or imagination.
VogelÕs op. 33 is an appealing collection of short studies, suitable for beginner to intermediate pianists, which between them cover a wide range of the styles, techniques, and textures often encountered in the Classical and Romantic repertoire. The work is presented here for the first time since its initial publication, in a new Critical Urtext edition.
