At the dawn of the 20th century Jan Lienstra packs up his family in the Netherlands and moves them to America, the place he considers the new Promised Land. His wife, Gerda, protests the move and does everything in her power to have the family return to the old country. But Jan is determined that his family and descendants will make their mark in their new homeland.
And so begins the four generation saga of the Lienstra family and their struggles to fulfill their destiny in America. They will survive two World Wars, a Great Depression, organized crime and the calamity of the World Trade center attack, all in an effort to make their way in the Promised Land.
