On completion of his training, he was transferred to Flieger Abteilung\u003cbr\u003e\n17, based at Attigny in France. He served with this squadron until December 1916, at which\u003cbr\u003e\ntime he was promoted and transferred to Macedonia, there to take command of Flieger Abteilung 30, stationed at Drama on\u003cbr\u003e\nthe Struma Front.\u003cbr\u003e\nAfter contracting malaria, he was transferred once more to the\u003cbr\u003e\nArmee-Oberkommando (AOK) staff, in September 1917.\u003cbr\u003e\nBetween the wars, he wrote a number of books about his\u003cbr\u003e\nservice in the air force during World War One, three of which\u003cbr\u003e\nwere translated into English.
