In these pages, each student writes from a different background with unique beliefs, values, and interests. Some choose to write about cultural issues here in the U. S. such as how ethnocentrism, stereotyping, and prejudice lead to discrimination against women, racial minorities, immigrants, and people with disabilities, all while Hollywood tries to ÒwhitewashÓ the issues away. They also write about how the U. S. gun culture regularly takes discrimination to a deadly level. Other students shift their focus to the international stage where discrimination against women and minorities in places like Saudi Arabia, India, and Tibet is also bearing negative fruit. Whether focused on a culture nearby or one far away, each writer applies key conceptual tools from the field of intercultural communication to seek solutions to important issues troubling our world.
