Justin Glubbers is running away from this "thing". All night long it is chasing after him. He is desparate to get away from that "thing" and not to have to deal with it anymore.
The "thing" chasing after him is responsible for his friend no longer existing.
He may or may not ever see his parents again who have gone on a retreat, the same retreat his friend's folks went to.
