A new opera (2017) based on the story of Winfrith, the charismatic Christian missionary who was murdered in 754. This is the full orchestral score of Act One. The action is based on historical fact, and the words come from Anglo-Saxon writings including contemporary letters that have survived. 'Winfrith' expresses the central ethical issue of religious extremism and its destructive impact on individuals, personal relationships and whole communities. This is not a work of Christian triumphalism, but an impassioned exploration of the perils of religious fundamentalism. It is a story very much of our time.
