This book contains a line by line transcription of rare, hand written and first person descriptions of incidents and events which took place in and around Winston County during the Civil War. Testimony is told by those who had property appropriated by the U.S. Army, primarily during Wilson's Raid of 1865. Many familiar Winston County surnames are represented. Corroborating testimony is often provided by relatives and neighbors. The Claims provide interesting insight into the life and times of our Winston County ancestors. In addition, the book provides copies of original signatures, and some pictures of the old claimants and their tombstones.
This is the first time these records have been fully transcribed, and indexed by full names. A valuable addition to the library of serious students of Winston County, Alabama history.
