This project began because I have a deep and abiding respect for the astounding effort it takes to work with stone. Stone carving is difficult enough, but writing in stone requires a level of passion and grace not matched by many skilled crafts.
I am only a photographer and I began to collect examples of this work in the course of traveling and was often simply struck by the beauty of the carved letters without bothering or being really interested in what was being written about. There is no intention here be a linguistic scholar or a typographer.
